Hineini: Coming Out in a Jewish High School

*Free screening*

Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007
5:00pm Hart House, University of Toronto

Hineini (Hebrew for 'Here I am') chronicles the story of one student's courageous fight to establish a gay-straight alliance at a Jewish high school in the Boston area and the transformative impact of her campaign on everyone involved.

Beyond the struggle to create a supportive environment for gay and lesbian students and teachers at the school, this is the story of a community wrestling with the very definition of pluralism and diversity in a Jewish context.

Gay Sons of Jewish Holocaust Survivors:
A Study in Multiple Identities

As part of Holocaust Education Week Congregation Shir Libeynu will sponsor this interactive presentation on Gay Jewish Sons of Holocaust survivors.

WHEN: Wednesday, November 7th, 7:00pm
WHERE: Metropolitan Community Church of T.O.,
115 Simpson Ave(Broadview Ave. & Gerrard St. area)

As part of a graduate paper in social work at York University, Leonard Molczadski sought out LGBTQ children of Holocaust survivors. This presentation will explore the five central themes that emerged in the course of interviewing gay male children of survivors: Coming Out, Fear of Pain, Guilt, Coping and Consciousness of Social Justice Issues.

Oscar Wolfman, one of the study's research participants and a sociologist with expertise in Gay/Lesbian Jewish issues, and Lev Raphael, the well-known American author of such works as "Dancing on Tisha B'av" and "Writing a Jewish Life", will be in attendance to provide their perspectives in these multiple identities.

The event will be moderated by Leonard, a gay Jewish child of Holocaust survivors. He is a practicing community-focused social worker and is currently researching the needs of LGBTT elders.
