Fruit Fiesta this Saturday Night!

Hi Everyone, Hope you all had an easy fast, and an even better post-fast feast;-). Just a quick reminder about our opening event for the fall happening this upcoming Saturday; An exotic fruit and dessert tasting party to welcome in Sukkot! KULANU’S HAVDALAH FRUIT FIESTA SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2nd Wolfond Centre for Jewish Campus Life, SECOND FLOOR (Patio) (At the west corner of Harbord and Huron, at UofT) 8PM RSVP: kulanutoronto-owner@yahoogroups.ca (RSVPing will help us figure out the fruit factor...not that too many fruit can ever be a bad thing :-) Join us for an unforgettable Havdalah (closing of the Sabbath, and welcoming of the new week), followed by fruit and desserts. Oh, and the party will be licensed (for the fruit, of course. And alcoholic beverages.) From there, join us for a night on the town! Quick RSVPs are always appreciated. For those of you who are new to the Kulanu listserve, a big welcome. Kulanu is Jewish LGBTQ campus group affiliated with Hillel. Although we are a club designed for the Jewish LGBTQ campus community, allies and non-Jewish partners are always welcome at our events. Previous events have included movie nights, BBQs, Shabbat dinners and even karaoke…but it’s the warm atmosphere created by our awesome members that make Kulanu events so great! For all those Kulanu veterans, welcome back, and looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming programs (with a couple of new, fresh twists!) NU, enough with the small talk! Below is a list of events we’ve conjured up to help make this New Year a little sweeter. Because we all hate e-mails that drag on forever (yours truly included), this one will just briefly outline the events, and upcoming e-mails will get into greater detail. So get your calendars out, folks, ‘cause you’re gonna want to mark these babies down…. Ah sukkot, the festival for gathering fruit…what better holiday for Kulanu to hold its opening bash! Join us for an unforgettable Havdalah (closing of the Sabbath, and welcoming of the new week), before we celebrate the night away in Hillel’s very own Sukkah. Oh, and the party will be licensed (for the fruit, of course. And alcoholic beverages.) b) SCREEN and SCHMOOZE: Film Screening of YOSSI and JAGGER Thursday, October 14th 7PM One of the most acclaimed films to come out of Israel in the past two years, “Yossi and Jagger” follows the lives of two Israeli soldiers who are gay. The film will be presented in conjunction with Hillel of Greater’s Toronto’s campus community, which will provide our wonderful allies an opportunity to come see what Kulanu is all about. Don’t miss this engaging and provocative film. c) SHABBAT DINNER! (Wahoo, new twists!) Friday, October 29th. Time TBA. Allllrighty, our most popular event is back, but with a few new flavourful twists! Shabbes cooking workshops, chavruta groups (informal learning sessions led by kulanunicks)…more ways to boost our already awesome “F” factor (the freylach factor- yiddish for “all ‘round happiness and good times :0) d) HOLOCAUST EDUCATION WEEK PROGRAMMING; Thursday, November 8th In conjuction with the Holocaust Education Committee in Toronto, Kulanu will be co-sponsoring a screening of the film “Paragraph 175,” which documents the struggle of queers, including queer Jews during the Third Reich. Hey y'all, Here are two wonderful upcoming events with queer twists being organized by kulanunicks Jon and J. Look out for an e-mail next week outlining all of our fall programming! Shabbat Shalom, Dan I. FIRST FRUITS FOR FRUIT! (A queer Rosh Hashana Celebration) Ever noticed how sexy Rosh Hashana is? Think big pregnant pumpkins, think pomegranates full of seeds, think long phallic leeks and carrots. Not to mention all that fruit and honey. You are invited to a queer Rosh Hashana celebration second night. Dinner will be a mix of the familiar and traditional with an urban queer bent. I will be hosting the event at my home, there will be plenty of traditional festive foods, prayers and discussions. All the food will be vegetarian and there will be plenty for vegans. I would like to extend an invitation to Kulanu folks. I do need to know numbers in advance please RSVP by Monday September 13th! I'm asking people to bring $6.00 to help cover costs, and to bring drinks, enthusiasm and curiosity. Non-Jewish partners are of course, also welcome. Please contact me if you have dietary or kashrut concerns.
